Jamie Dornan trailer for new film Wild Mountain Thyme prompts criticism over Irish accents

The full trailer for Jamie Dornan's latest movie was released last night prompting criticism from some over the 'dodgy' Irish accents.

Wild Mountain Thyme is a romantic drama which follows the story of an Irish family where conflicts arise when the patriarch threatens to give their farm over to an American nephew as opposed to his own son.

Jamie Dornan plays the role of Anthony Reilly alongside love interest Emily Blunt as Rosemary Muldoon and the film is set in Co Mayo.

Emily Blunt's character Rosemary has her heart set on winning her neighbor Anthony Reilly's love but it seems Anthony (Jamie Dornan) is oblivious to his admirer and is furious by his own father's plans to sell the family farm to his American nep

After the first full trailer was released on social media on Tuesday night, critics were out in force poking fun at the 'worst Irish accents ever'.

One Twitter user commented: "And the prize for the worst Irish accent for the past decade goes too.... an actual Irishman Jamie Dornan !! Wtf lad ??"

Another said: "What awfulness is THIS! What time period is it even set in? And Jamie Dornan is Irish, but sounds like he’s eaten a box of lucky charms."

One likened it to Sean Connery in Darby O'Gill and the Lttle People saying: "Jamie Dornan got his accent straight from Sean Connery in Darby O'Gill. #Rowshmary Shocking lads."

Another critic slammed it as insulting saying: "That's an embarrassment to whoever was involved in it Hackneyed Stereotypes that would have been out of date 60 years ago. The accents are mangled and the speech structure is blarneyfied beyond recognition. It's actually insulting."

But some ardent Jamie Dornan fans were quick to defend him with one saying: "For everyone ripping on Jamie Dornan's accent: he also has to put on an accent. He has a northern accent. I'm from cork and do you think for the life of me I could portray any other accent? No chance. However that doesn't make up for everyone else's shocking portrayal lmao."

Another fan added: "If you don't like #JamieDornan don't talk about him! if you have nothing good to say, keep quiet! stop criticizing as if you could do better! What unnecessary hatred for a person who doesn't deserve it! Do something productive with your life...something good, if you can!"

In an interview last week, the Co Down native opened up about his past failures saying his failures that shaped his success.

Speaking to journalist Elizabeth Day on her How to Fail podcast, Dornan admitted he wears his failures "like a badge of honour" and although fans may not believe it, he said there's plenty of them.

"You are nothing without your failures and there is nobody who gets to any considered high position, or impressive position from the outside looking in, who has not failed massively," he added.

"It builds us, it colours us and it is essential and I think I wear my failures like a badge of honour a little bit because there are so f***ing many of them, particularly as an actor, there just is."

Wild Mountain Thyme is set for release on December 11, 2020.
