Jamie Carragher worried by Mikel Arteta's response to David Luiz horror show

Jamie Carragher appeared perplexed by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta's support of David Luiz following the centre-back's nightmare performance in his side's 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

Luiz came off the bench to replace Pablo Mari after the Spanish defender was injured in the first half, but had an evening to forget.

He was at fault for City's first goal after failing to cut out Kevin de Bruyne's pass for Raheem Sterling, and was then sent off and conceded a penalty after taking down Riyad Mahrez in the box in the second half.

Arteta insisted he still wants to keep Luiz at the club despite speculation linking him with a move away this summer, saying after the match: "Whatever decision or whatever we were thinking about David's contract before tonight's game, remains the same after tonight's game."

But speaking to Sky Sports Carragher said he feels it would be best for all parties if the player moves on.

"People keep talking about experience, sometimes it's one of the most overrated qualities," Carragher said.

"It doesn’t matter how old you are. David Luiz is not good enough for Arsenal. They’ve got a young French lad coming in next season, they’ve bought Mari, they need another one because they’ve still got Sokratis.

"Mustafi played tonight. These are not good enough. The problem with someone like a David Luiz, you think you’ll do this and do that and get the best out of him. You won’t.

"People at the top of the club, if they are deciding that David Luiz is not getting this year extended that is right. If Mikel Arteta thinks he should get that year I think that’s wrong.

"I’d be really worried as an Arsenal fan if Mikel Arteta felt David Luiz should get another year at Arsenal. I’d be worried if he was my manager."
