Jamie Carragher warns Liverpool over 'big problem' caused by transfer decision

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged his former club to dip into the transfer market this summer, despite the club deciding against a move for soon-to-be Chelsea forward Timo Werner.

Last night, Mohamed Salah was only deemed fit enough for the substitutes bench, meaning that Takumi Minamino was brought into the team on the right-hand side.

But the Japanese was brought off at the interval. While he had impressed with his pressing in the first 45 minutes, the threat was not the same as with the Egyptian, with Minamino seemingly better suited to playing through the middle.

Via the Daily Express, Carragher said on Sky Sports: "The front three we know are as good as anything in Europe but whenever one of them has not been playing, there is a massive drop off.

"I went back to a game earlier in the season, I don't think Salah played at Manchester United and that was another game that Liverpool dropped points in.

"They don't miss too many games but when they do there is a big drop off and that's why I think Liverpool still need to strengthen their front three.

"Divock Origi is a legend for Liverpool because of the goals he's scored at different times but isn't quite the quality. Minamino as part of the front three - not for me.

"I wouldn't say Liverpool are lucky but the actual front three are very robust, they don't miss too many games.

"But if Liverpool were to lose one of those, certainly one of the wide players, for maybe a length of time, I think they could have a real problem next season."

Liverpool will confirm themselves as Premier League champions over the course of the next few weeks, but Carragher's comments echo those of many supporters, who feel that strengthening during the summer transfer market would be the ideal position to be in.

With the African Cup of Nations still expected to take place in early 2021, Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita could all be missing for a period of time during a crucial point in the 2020/21 campaign.
