Jamie Carragher urges Premier League to make this decision for Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs

Jamie Carragher has urged the Premier League to follow UEFA and commit to only dishing out the league title, European qualification and relegation to the Championship on ‘sporting merit’.

Yesterday, UEFA confirmed in a statement that it was their advice that Champions League and Europa League spots were handed out to teams who had fully earned them - suggesting a mini-tournament to decide the spot should the full league season fail to be completed.

And Carragher has urged the Premier League to make a stand and follow suit to provide clarity on the situation to all teams involved and allow clubs to come to an agreement on how to end the campaign.

Teams, players and fans alike are all currently unsure of how the season will be completed - if at all.

Rumours have ranged from ‘null and void’, a decision that would see the entire season void, to completion as it is, with Liverpool being handed the league title and the current bottom three missing out on the chance to fight for survival.

“What UEFA said yesterday about Champions League places and European qualification, that it would be decided on sporting merit, I’d actually like to see the Premier League come out and say that,” said Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports.

“I do feel that there are a few teams down the bottom who are not shying in coming out at times and saying why the season shouldn’t continue or it should be null void.

“I still think it should be decided on sporting merit, whether that’s title-winners, relegation and European qualification, even at the end of the season if we don’t finish the games, as UEFA said yesterday, it should be on sporting merit.

“How they work that out is up for debate but there still should be teams coming up to the Premier League and teams going down.

He added: “If the Premier League came out and said that, I think a lot more people in the game would be trying to look at ways of how we could somehow get the season finished.”
