Jamie Carragher urges Man Utd to sell Paul Pogba as "everyone is unhappy with his position"

Jamie Carragher has claimed Manchester United should sell Paul Pogba, after failing to live up to his world record transfer fee.

The Frenchman was brought back to Old Trafford in 2016, for £89million, making him the most expensive footballer in history at the time.

But under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Frenchman has struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting XI, particularly with United opting to play two defensive midfielders.

The United boss has struggled to find a spot for Pogba alongside Bruno Fernandes, with debate surrounding whether the two can play together.

Earlier this week, France manager Didier Deschamps claimed Pogba "cannot be satisfied" with his current club situation.

"He is in a situation at Manchester United where he cannot be satisfied with his playing time and his position. He is not in his best period," he said.

"The injuries came one after another, and Covid hit him pretty hard as well. He needs to find some rhythm.

"Last month his game had been pretty good and consistent despite a lack of pace. He's been playing since, but you can't say he's happy.

"With me, there is no problem, I will make sure to manage him. It is never easy for a player in his situation."

But Carragher has claimed that the fact he has no stable position is an indictment of his below-par performances in the Premier League.

Asked if he agreed with Deschamps comments, the Liverpool legend told talkSPORT: “No, not really. In some ways, everybody is unhappy with his position, because the fact we’re still talking about, ‘What is Paul Pogba’s best position?’, when he’s been at the club for four years.

“I think that tells you he’s never done well enough in any position or tactical set-ups, that different managers have had at Manchester United. When I look at it now, would I pick Paul Pogba in the Manchester United team? I wouldn’t.

“He came with a huge transfer fee, but I don’t think he’s a great player. When I say that, I’ve said it a few times on Monday Night Football, people say, ‘well he’s won the World Cup’.

“I get that, I understand that, but he’s been in our league, when he came in I wanted him to have the impact of what [Frank] Lampard had at Chelsea, what Stevie [Gerrard] had with Liverpool, what Yaya Toure had with Man City.

He added: “People may say that is too much pressure to put on one man. But that’s what we were told was coming. This package, the most expensive player in the world, he can do everything in midfield. He’s played for Juventus, he’s playing in Champions League finals for them. And it just hasn’t happened for him.

“And if it was me, I’d be looking to move him on.”
