Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says the Reds should explore the possibility of signing James Maddison from Leicester in order to add some depth to their squad.
Jurgen Klopp's European champions opted against making any serious senior additions this summer, adding only youngsters Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg as well as backup goalkeepers Adrian and Andy Lonergan.
Some Reds fans were left disappointed at the lack of new additions to the squad, and Carragher says that a move for Maddison would help his former side make "that next step up" as they bid to go one better in their Premier League title battle with Manchester City this season.
“I think he is the one player outside of the top six who Liverpool should be looking at," said Carragher on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football coverage of Wolves ' 1-1 draw with Manchester United , after which his fellow pundit also .
“People have been talking about Coutinho coming back, but obviously that hasn’t happened as he has gone to Bayern Munich, but if you are looking in the Premier League, yes he will cost a lot of money, but he should be the one Liverpool are looking at if you are going to that next step up.”
Neville added that he thinks Maddison, 22, will break into Gareth Southgate's England side this season.
“He is a genuine creative player," said the former Manchester United defender.
"I think he is outstanding. I think he will be playing for England a lot of times.
“He will be in the European Championship squad. I think he’s fantastic.”
Maddison joined Leicester from Norwich City for around £20million last summer, and scored seven goals in 38 games last season.
