Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Jurgen Klopp's side should learn from Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
United face off against Liverpool in a first-vs-third clash this afternoon, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side holding a three-point advantage over the champions heading into the game.
A title fight between the two giants has surprisingly been a rare occurrence in the Premier League, with United and Liverpool finishing as the top two on just one occasion.
For Liverpool, this season marks their first defence of a league title in three decades and Carragher praised Ferguson for how dominant he made United over a period of two decades.
"Liverpool are at a point in their development under Klopp where there is much to be learned and admired from the manner in which Sir Alex Ferguson turned the end of a three-decade wait for a title into an extended period of title success," he wrote in the Telegraph.
"When the honours board is read and supporters see Ferguson’s 13 league titles, few remember how gruelling many of those campaigns were.
"Our memories play tricks and we like to think of his all-conquering side as stampeding over every challenger. That is not how it was.
"Despite recent setbacks, Klopp’s side remains well placed to defend the title. They are still the team to beat.
"United understand that better than anyone. That’s why every meeting between the clubs - no matter what their positions - carries so much meaning."
