Jamie Carragher tells Chelsea what they must do to challenge for the Premier League title

Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea will be unable to mount a Premier League title charge this season unless they add a new goalkeeper to their ranks.

The Blues have been the Premier League's big spenders so far this summer, drafting in five new recruits, with three of them of being big-money signings in the shape of Leicester City and England left-back Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech of Ajax and Germany international Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

The trio have also been joined in making the switch to Stamford Bridge by Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.

Chelsea's recruitment drive this summer has been nothing short of outstanding, with head coach Frank Lampard doing all he can to turn his side back into genuine title contenders once again.

Chelsea: 2020/21 season in preview

The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League last season but lacked an array of key attributes to consider themselves ready for a title push.

And despite adding a plethora of new faces to the squad so far this summer, Chelsea are still without one necessary addition to make a title charge possible.

That is according to Sky Sports pundit Carragher, who is urging the Blues to add a new goalkeeper to their ranks before the transfer window closes in a little over a month's time.

Carragher, as quoted by the Metro, explained: "Chelsea had to buy four players, I get that.

"But if they don’t reinforce in the goalkeeping situation, I don’t see much change for them really in terms of where they will finish."

In fairness to the Blues, who face Brighton & Hove Albion on the opening day of the new season, they have been linked with an array of goalkeepers in recent weeks and months.

They include Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak, Rennes shot-stopper Edouard Mendy, Mike Maignan of Lille and Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.

But with the Blues on the cusp of splashing out a big-money fee on Bayer Leverkusen attacking-midfield star Kai Havertz, the Blues may be forced to box clever in their quest of landing a new goalkeeper.

Lampard still has both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero on his books but he is eager to strengthen between the sticks.
