Jamie Carragher suggests new position for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Liverpool

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be used at right-back next season if Neco Williams decides to depart after Euro 2020.

After just 12 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, the Wales international looks set to leave in search of first-team football after a number of seasons in the shadow of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The ECHO understands Liverpool are unlikely to chase a replacement for Williams in the transfer market with Joe Gomez able to provide cover when necessary while Jurgen Klopp has high hopes for youngster Conor Bradley.

The 17-year-old made his Northern Ireland debut at the end of May in their 3-0 win over Malta and could be the next academy star to progress to the first team.

However, former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Williams' departure could present Oxlade-Chamberlain to reinvent himself in a new position under Klopp.

Carragher tweeted: "Could the Ox (Oxlade-Chamberlain) not play there?

"Got the pace & engine, he’ll be fine on the ball & used to being in crossing areas after spending so long there as a winger."

Over the last couple of years, the midfielder has struggled to staple down a place in Jurgen Klopp's plans after an cruciate injury against Roma four years ago ruled him out for over a year.

During his spell at Arsenal, Oxlade-Chamberlain impressed as a wing-back under Arsene Wenger but admitted he favoured playing higher up the field after completing his move to Merseyside.

He said: "I’ve spoke about this for about six years – my whole career – where I’m going to be playing or where I’d like to play.

"I just say I’d like to be an attacking midfielder. I’ve spoke to the manager about this, there’s going to be a lot of positions [available] in this team: up-front, because the wingers play a bit more inside, or the midfield.

"I wouldn’t like to put a label on it at this stage, I need to get a feel for how the team plays and obviously it’s for the manager to decide."

‘But ultimately, I just want to be able to be an attacking influence and have that effect further up the pitch; whether that’s from an attacking midfield position or one of the wider positions coming in, I’m not too fussed."
