Jamie Carragher stands by Jadon Sancho prediction despite slow Manchester United start

Jamie Carragher has maintained that Jadon Sancho is his 'player to watch' this season despite his slow start to life at Manchester United.

After years of chasing and several failed attempts, United finally managed to bring Sancho back to Manchester in the summer in a £76million deal from Borussia Dortmund.

The winger arrived amid much fanfare after scoring 50 goals and claiming 64 assists during his four years in Germany but things haven't gone to plan at Old Trafford so far.

Sancho has only managed to score on two occasions for United and hasn't yet found the scintiliating form he displayed so often in Dortmund.

Sky Sports pundit Carragher was one of many who were intrigued to see Sancho in the Premier League and he named him as his 'played to watch' prior to the season.

While the 21-year-old is yet to deliver on his promise so far, Carragher insists he's still his 'one to watch' as he was interested to see if he could perform at United, not necessarily predicting that he would.

“I’m not trying to back out of it,” Carragher explained on Monday Night Football.

“I wanted to actually watch Jadon Sancho, because I had spoken so much about how well he’d done at Dortmund. And I think at the end of last season we didn’t put him in our Euros squad and we got a lot of stick for that on social media.

“I hadn’t seen enough from him and when I’d seen him in an England shirt I hadn’t been that impressed. He was one to watch as in ‘I want to see what he’s about’.

“Listen, it hasn’t started well for him, but he’s still a young player, he’s got plenty of time, a few years at United, but you’d definitely want a bit more from him, no doubt.”

Carragher was looking back at his predictions from before the season started and was impressed by his calls, having named Brighton as overachievers, Mohamed Salah to finish top goalscorer and Arsenal's Emil Smith Rowe to be the best young player.

Although he did predict them to finish fourth, the former Liverpool defender also named United as his underachievers, which is certainly coming to pass so far.

“I think I’m looking quite well there, actually,” Carragher said on Sky Sports after Monday’s game.

“Brighton have done well, City are big favourites for the title, Man United – that was pretty obvious wasn’t it, it was staring you in the face?

“Mo Salah was always going to be the top goal scorer. Emile Smith Rowe is on fire – four goals in his last four games.”
