Jamie Carragher slams John Stones for "stupid" errors in England's defeat by Holland

Jamie Carragher launched an impassioned defence of 'playing it out from the back', slamming John Stones for his "stupid" mistakes.

Manchester City centre-back Stones played a part in all three of Holland's goals against England in their Nations League semi-final victory.

Stones failed to track the run of Matthijs de Ligt in the second half as the Ajax centre-back beat him in the air to head home an equalising goal.

Kyle Walker later netted an own goal after Stones was dispossessed while messing about with the ball as the last man.

And finally, the Manchester City defender played a poor ball to Ross Barkley who in turn played a terrible ball, which was intercepted and lead directly to a third.

The Sky Sports pundit suggested 'playing out from the back' was to blame for England's mistakes, but Carragher has hit back, laying the blame at Stones.

"Forget this talk that we're playing too much out from the back. This thing with Stones, he's made a stupid decision," said the Liverpool legend.

"That is the way people play now, and if someone comes unstuck, well that's the way the modern game is played now. I don't want to see Stones just smash it up the pitch.

"If you want to play at the top level then you're going to have to deal with that.

"And I accept that can happen if you play out from the back, but I'd rather see that than someone just smashing it up the field."

On Stones' progression since leaving Everton for Man City, Carragher added: "I don't think John Stones has kicked on after making that move from Everton.

"I still don't feel like he has the 100 per cent backing of Pep Guardiola.

"He may have improved as a defender but I still feel like he goes back to [Vincent] Kompany or [Nicolas] Otamendi.

"I've never felt John Stones is one of the first names on the team sheet at Manchester City. It doesn't feel like he has cemented that position."
