Jamie Carragher slams 'idiot' Luke Ayling for Leeds United red card at Arsenal

Leeds United defender Luke Ayling came in for heavy criticism following his first-half red card at Arsenal. The experienced Whites man saw red after a two-footed challenge on Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli, with Jesse Marsch's side already 2-0 down.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially only showed a yellow card, but changed that to a red after a VAR review. Leeds forward Raphinha was booked for his protests over the decision as the first half turned into a nightmare.

But there was little sympathy for Ayling from the pundits in the Sky Sports studio at the interval. Former Liverpool defender Carragher slammed Ayling for the challenge, which was at best unncessary.

"I love Luke Ayling as a player, but what an idiot," he said. "The lack of professionalism for his own team-mates and what that could mean going forward. It’s not just down to 10-men. Disgusting tackle, coming in two feet there.

"It reminds me of a tackle Vinnie Jones did a long time ago, I think maybe Danny Stevens. What he thinks was going to happen on the back of that, it was obvious it was going to be a red card.

"That’s a big plus point for VAR, one of the reasons why we have. But to do that, put your team-mates down to 10-men, you miss the last three games of the season. That might be the last ever game Ayling ever plays in the Premier League."
