Jamie Carragher sends warning to Tottenham fans over Jose Mourinho appointment

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has warned Tottenham fans that Jose Mourinho will not change his tactical style and they must accept his ways.

The Portuguese boss arrives on a three-year deal following Mauricio Pochettino's sacking on Tuesday and will take charge of his first match in this weekend's London derby with West Ham.

While Mourinho brings with him an impressive track record on trophies, he has often faced criticism for tactics that are perceived to be negative - which was a major sticking point for Manchester United fans.

As a result, Carragher has warned that he will not change his ways when taking the reigns at Spurs but that this is something that the club's hierarchy will have already come to terms with.

“There will be concern over the style and that’s not just after Pochettino, Tottenham are known to play a certain way, similar to what Manchester United supporters spoke about when Jose got the job there,” he told Sky Sports.

“So that could be a problem going forward if it’s a similar style of football to what he produced at Manchester United but Jose has his way of doing things and he’s not going to change for Tottenham.

“They brought Jose Mourinho in because they think he can win trophies and he’ll do it his way. I don’t think the position that Spurs are in, in the league, will have anything to do with how Jose will set up or play his football.

“I don’t think it’s a big deal where they are now. They’re not in a great position but I think they’re three points off fifth and I think before you know it, as we go into the New Year, Tottenham will be challenging for the top-four positions and will certainly be in the European positions so I don’t think that has any bearing on it.

“But there is no doubt that if Jose’s not successful at Tottenham that will be something that people in our position and certainly the supporters will throw back at him.”
