Jamie Carragher sends perfect Gary Neville message with Steven Gerrard tweet

Jamie Carragher has joined in with a joke at Gary Neville’s expense following Steven Gerrard’s appointment as Aston Villa manager.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has replaced Dean Smith at the helm at Villa Park, in what is his second job in senior football management.

The 41-year-old left Glasgow Rangers after more than three years north of the border, during which time he ended the club's 10-year wait for a Scottish Premiership title.

Villa's appointment of the former Liverpool captain has led to ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards poking fun at Gary Neville for his comments about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Neville has often been reluctant to criticise the Manchester United boss - with the pair being team-mates while as players at Old Trafford.

Richards’ tweet was aimed in jest at Neville, where he pondered whether Carragher would offer the same treatment of Gerrard, given they used to play alongside each other at Liverpool.

“I wonder if @Carra23 is gonna protect Gerrard like @GNev2 protects Solskjaer (eye emojis) but that’s not my business,” wrote Richards on Twitter.

Carragher was quick to respond to Richards’ tweet, with his reply also making fun of Neville with a response similar to what the ex-United skipper has offered in defence of Solskjaer.

Carragher wrote: “‘They should keep him as they’ve tried Dean Smith & Steve Bruce before so they’re not going down that road again!’”

After Liverpool’s 5-0 win over United last month, Neville argued that his old club would not go with a manager similar to Solskjaer's predecessors, which is what Carragher is referencing.

“The reason the board will stay stable and go at least to the end of the season is because what happened to Jose Mourinho, with Louis Van Gaal, they won’t bring a hitman in again, a hitman that comes in for two years, does a job, they’re not going to do that again,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“The club are going to stick with Ole until the end of the season. Ole’s got to win a trophy this season and I think they’ll stick with him until the end of the season but this is painful.

“Look, in any other club he’s in massive trouble tonight. In any other part of Manchester United’s recent history he’d be in trouble.

“But because of what’s happened with Van Gaal and Mourinho and the change that’s happened, they’re not going to do it now.”
