Jamie Carragher sends Mesut Ozil warning to Arsenal over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Jamie Carragher has warned Arsenal they could be faced with another 'Mesut Ozil situation' over star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Despite being Arsenal's leading scorer so far this season with 14 goals across all competitions, Aubameyang has largely struggled for form coming under intense criticism since signing a new contract in the summer.

Having been through the whole Ozil saga when the Gunners struggled to get the midfielder's £350,000-per-week wage bill off their books until this winter, Arsenal fans can be forgiven for feeling a little nervous when a player who signs a new deal does not perform.

And that's what Sky Sports pundit Carragher has highlighted in his recent criticism of Aubameyang.

Mikel Arteta on Kieran Tierney, 12 defeats and Granit Xhaka

Initially speaking about the striker's performance against West Ham, he said: "It's one of the worst performances I've seen all season, and when he went off the pitch, in the 77th minute, Arsenal scored and he celebrated with Lacazette.

"I said 'that's the most energetic I've seen him all season.

"He then gets brought off again against Liverpool. I think there will be a big worry at Arsenal and Mikel Arteta that they may have another Mesut Ozil situation.

"When they give someone a big contract...they give someone £300,000 or £350,000-per-week and good luck to them, but you have to justify that.

"And next season, and these coming months, that will be going through the manager's mind, because what he is producing right now is nowhere near good enough for how good a player he is and what Arsenal have invested in."

Aubameyang's new contract will run until 2023 but Arsenal fans will be hoping the 31-year-old rediscovers his peak form long before then.
