Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea are now on their way to producing a squad that could possibly challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The Blues are expecting a deal for Timo Werner to be concluded this week, football.london understands.
While a host of other top names from around Europe have been linked with Frank Lampard’s side over the past few weeks.
And Carragher believes that while Chelsea’s top-four hopes hang by a thread ahead of the Premier League's restart on Wednesday, there is no doubt if the Blues secure some of the names they are being linked with at the minute then they have a chance to claim top honours next season.
“I think they were another team who the break came at a really good time for them,” he told Telegraph Football’s Q&A session.
“It was almost like a reset and look back at what they have done. The first-half of the season was really good, the second-half not so good.
“They have had difficulties in the Champions League as well with the Bayern Munich result. I think he (Frank Lampard) has had a good season all in all considering it is his first season.
“It is possibly on a knife edge. If they drop out of the top-four or miss out on the Champions League then people will say it hasn’t been a good season but if they don’t people will say it was a great season.
“But I think the break will have come at a good time and as I say I think it will give Frank the chance to really look back at the season, what they have done right, what they have done well, almost get a level head, even the in coaching staff as well.
“Even the coaching staff are inexperienced as well. Just relax, we have done alright and get ready for the next nine games.
“Make a good start and if Chelsea get going in the first two or three fixtures then they could make themselves a gap to give them that confidence to finish the job off. But it does feel like it is on a knife edge.”
Carragher then continued: “I also think with him flexing his muscles in January, and letting it be known that he wasn’t happy with the transfer business.
“Chelsea are now moving out of their way now to provide him with a squad that can do more than just challenge for the top-four and maybe the title next season.”
