Jamie Carragher sends Arsenal transfer message to Raul Sanllehi after David Luiz horror show

Jamie Carragher has insisted Arsenal must move on from David Luiz and sign a new centre back this summer.

The Brazilian defender's contract runs out on June 30 and despite both Mikel Arteta and Luiz wanting to stay, a new deal is yet to be agreed.

Luiz endured a nightmare return to Premier League action against Manchester City, coming off the bench to give away two goals and get sent off inside half an hour.

The 33-year-old then conducted a revealing post-match interview, insisting both he and Arteta want an extension to his current deal.

However, with William Saliba back in the first-team squad for next season, Carragher has insisted Arsenal should turn to their youthful options and add another signing for next season.

“Obviously the club don’t want him to stay and don’t want to give him a contract by the sound of it. I totally get that - why would you?" Carragher told Sky Sports.

"By the sound of what he’s saying is he wishes he made the decision to say he’s not playing, maybe his contract is finished. There are certain players - I think Ryan Fraser has refused to play.

"Maybe his situation is similar and he wishes he had taken a different decision. He’s saying Mikel Arteta wants him to stay. It’s not right for him to stay. Arsenal need to move on from David Luiz.

“People talk about experience - sometimes experience is one of the most overrated qualities. David Luiz is not good enough for Arsenal. It’s about how good you are, not about how experienced you are.

"They’ve got a young French lad coming in next season, they’ve bought Mari, they need to sign another one. They have Sokratis and Mustafi - these aren’t good enough. That’s the problem.

"You won’t get the best out of David Luiz. If the people at the club are deciding that Luiz isn’t getting his year extended, that is right. If Mikel Arteta thinks he should, then that’s wrong.

"I’d be worried if I was an Arsenal fan, and he thinks Luiz should get another year. I’d be worried if he was my manager."
