Jamie Carragher says what Liverpool must do to secure top-four spot in 'freak' season

Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool need to be in a position to pounce on their rivals’ mistakes in the final month of this “freak” season if they’re to secure a top four finish.

With the reigning Premier League champions off the pace in defending their crown, it currently looks like the Reds best chance of qualifying for next term’s Champions League could be winning this year’s competition.

However, a 1-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers last night courtesy of a goal from Diogo Jota did lift them above Everton and Tottenham Hotspur into sixth place and move to within five points of a top four spot.

Carragher, who spent his entire career at Anfield, making 737 appearances for the club and helping them to win the Champions League in 2005, insists that Liverpool need to be in touching distance of the qualification places ahead of the run-in if they’re to have any chance of nicking a top-four spot.

He told Sky Sports : “It's been a freak [season] and the other teams [they've lost too].

“At this moment, I still believe Liverpool will miss out on the top four.

“However, they need to make teams like Leicester and Chelsea nervous and see what they can do.

“With four or five games to go, they need to be in a position where they can jump on any mistakes the teams above them make.”
