Jamie Carragher's verdict on Nuno's relationship with Jorge Mendes amid Tottenham talks

Jamie Carragher has already defended Nuno Espirito Santo's relationship with agent Jorge Mendes, when the Portuguese coach was in charge at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Espirito Santo is expected to be announced as Tottenham's new manager next week, football.london understands, just in time for the start of the club's pre-season training on July 5.

During his time in charge of Wolves, the 47-year-old took advantage of his strong relationship with his agent Mendes, who also has numerous Portuguese clients.

Pedro Neto, Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota, Nelson Semedo, Daniel Podence, Rayan Ait Nouri, Rui Patricio and Vitinha are just some of Mendes' clients to be signed by Espirito Santo during his time at Molineux.

This is definitely something Spurs can take advantage of if he is indeed appointed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Carragher defended Espirito Santo's relationship with Mendes during his time in charge at Wolves, with his 'everyone wins' comment something that Tottenham fans could take on board.

In a column for The Telegraph in December last year, the former Liverpool defender wrote: "I have nothing against clubs having a good relationship with agents. It is part of the modern game. But that collaboration must be mutually beneficial.

"People sneer at Wolverhampton Wanderers for being so close to Jorge Mendes, but Mendes is supplying Nuno Espirito Santo with young, hungry players who suit how he wants to play.

"They perform well, maximise value and move on for big fees. Everyone wins."

Mendes also has plenty of other talent on his client list, something Spurs will be hoping to take advantage of.

Andre Silva, who scored 29 goals in 34 games for Eintracht Frankfurt last season, is just one name that Tottenham could target from Mendes' long list of clients.

In an interview with ESPN Brazil, via PortugalsNews, in 2019, Espirito Santo spoke about Mendes' impact in his decision to join Wolves as their manager in 2017.

"At the time of the decision, he (Mendes) made the decision with me.

"After the talks with Wolverhampton, it was he who convinced me to take charge of the club and that would really be the right step for me."

The former Wolves boss also told The Sun: "I will always say that (the club's connections with Mendes are good) because you're talking about the best agent in the world.

"So he has the best players. So if us, Wolves, have a chance to get access to this profile of players, it's better for us.

"But that doesn't say we are not open and alert to all the situations in the market. Regardless of who is the agent. It is all about the player, what he can give us as a team."
