Jamie Carragher's pointed Ballon d'Or remark after Mohamed Salah's goal vs Everton

Jamie Carragher has sent a pointed Ballon d'Or message after Mohamed Salah's sublime strike against Everton.

The Egyptian continued his fine form in Wednesday night's Merseyside derby as he put the Red 2-0 up in the first half, before Demarai Gray pegged one back for the hosts.

Jordan Henderson played Salah through on goal as he would curl a brilliant finish past Jordan Pickford, before making it 3-1 after pouncing on a Seamus Coleman mistake.

Salah is arguably the best player in the world on current form, but finished seventh at the Ballon d'OR awards with Jorginho, Karim Benzema, N’golo Kante and Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi all ranked higher than the Reds forward.

Messi picked up his seventh golden ball in what was viewed as a controversial decision as Lewandowski finished runner-up to the Paris Saint-Germain star.

And former Liverpool star Carragher seems to disagree where Salah was ranked as he shared a pointed remark on social media.

He tweeted: "Best player in the world, Mohamed Salah."

Jurgen Klopp was "surprised" at where Salah finished up at the ceremony and doesn’t understand the decision-making behind the award.

He said: “It is not in my hands. Is the Ballon d’Or a journalists vote? Then yeah, don’t ask me, it’s your fault,” he said at a press conference. “If you think he should be higher up, then you should convince your colleagues.

“You can give it to Lionel Messi for the career he has had, all these kind of things, but then don’t give it to Robert Lewandowski this time – so it’s quite tricky to win it at all. Mo definitely should have been higher up."

Messi reckons Salah and Lewandowski will be in with a good shot of winning it in the coming years as he collected his prize.

He said: "I don’t know if the record is beatable.

"I just have to accept it but I’m not sure if it can be beaten.

"Salah will have opportunities in the years to come. Both players [Salah and Lewandowski] are at their best at the moment and will have more chances to win it."
