Jamie Carragher's message to Jurgen Klopp over Liverpool Champions League team selection

Jamie Carragher insists Jurgen Klopp can't afford to gamble with his team selection for Wednesday night's Champions League quarter-final showdown with FC Porto.

The Reds go into the second leg at the Estadio do Dragao with a commanding 2-0 lead, but the Kop legend doesn't believe that Klopp can rest any key personnel with one eye on the Premier League title race.

Carragher told the ECHO: “I expect them to go through but 2-0 is the type of score where Klopp cannot afford to take any chances with the team.

“You've got to field your strongest line up and finish the job off.

“If Liverpool had won by three or four at Anfield you maybe could have looked at taking two or three out.

“But you have to go with your strongest side for this one and then there's a decent break until the Cardiff game on Sunday.”

The 2005 Champions League winner is bullish about Liverpool's chances of going all the way to Madrid on June 1, regardless of whether it's Manchester United or Barcelona they have to face in the last four.

“I don't think there's anything to fear whoever Liverpool come up against,” he said.

“Of course you have respect for sides but Liverpool have shown in getting to the final last year and in getting to the latter stages again this time around that they are on a par with anything in Europe.

“It's on any given day whether you're at your best, whether decisions go your way, whether you make mistakes. Whether it's United or Barcelona who get through, it will be a tough, tight semi-final, whoever is there waiting.”

Top of the Premier League table and gunning for European glory, Klopp's Reds are chasing a dream double.

Carragher believes Sunday's thrilling league win over Chelsea at Anfield showcased what sets the class of 2018/19 apart from the last Liverpool team which challenged for the league title five years ago.

“This is a better team,” he said.

“That team had great individuals - the front three of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling. The front three now compares to that, if not better.

Pep Guardiola reveals points total Man City will need to deny Liverpool the Premier League title

“There's no doubt that this team is a lot stronger defensively. Maybe people will say that team in that particular season was a bit more exciting in the way that it played.

“It was probably like what Jurgen Klopp's side played like two years ago.

This is a different Klopp team now. A lot more stable and a lot stronger.”

Carragher was speaking at a special 23 Foundation event at Brunswick Youth and Community Centre in Bootle

Around 2,000 Easter eggs and hundreds of bottles of water were donated to local charities and community groups including the Owen McVeigh Foundation, An Hour For Others, Zoe's Place, Community Pantry, Red Neighbours and Fans Supporting Foodbanks.

Les Wright from the 23 Foundation told the ECHO: “We wanted to put on something for Easter and thought this was an ideal opportunity to use some of the guys and the sponsors we work with who kindly make donations.

“It was great to get the community organisations together and they will then distribute them to kids to the wider community through the work they do.

“For example, the Owen McVeigh Foundation have a sponsored walk up Snowdon coming up so we've managed to facilitate keeping them all hydrated for that.”

The eggs were kindly collected and donated by Manny Johal from the Sikh Toy Appeal. He said: “We've been working with the 23 Foundation for the last few years to help unprivileged families and special needs children.

“I'm a lifelong Liverpool fan and we wanted to give something back to the children of Liverpool.”
