Jamie Carragher has said that the coronavirus-enforced suspension of all elite football in England should not mean this season is a write-off - as it would be unfair on teams such as Leeds United.
The former Liverpool defender, now a popular pundit on Sky Sports, took to Twitter this morning - before news broke that the Premier League and EFL are suspending games until at least April 3 because of the spread of the virus.
Carragher said: "You can’t start next season until this one finishes, whenever that is."
He also appeared to suggest that the bottom three in the top flight would stay up at the expense of those coming up from the second tier - which includes Leeds as they are top of the of the Championship at present.
With just nine games of the regular season to go it had looked like Marcelo Bielsa's side were well on course to seal a return to the top flight for the first time since 2004.
They are on a superb run of five consecutive wins and have done that by also achieving five clean sheets.
But now the league has been suspended and there is no guarantee that it will resume on the given date of April 3.
Some experts have said that the outbreak is expected to be at its peak in May and June so if the suspension keeps on being extended, there is the possibility that the entire season could be declared void - a nightmare scenario for Leeds.
