Jamie Carragher ruins Peter Schmeichel in playful jibe over Man Utd statement
Jamie Carragher left Micah Richards in stitches during a discussion about Manchester United's managerial search - by reminding Peter Schmeichel of his stint at Manchester City.
Old Trafford legend Schmeichel offered to become United's interim manager until the end of the season during a passionate message pledging he would help his former club in their hour of need.
The goalkeeping great made 398 appearances across eight seasons with the club, winning 10 major honours including five Premier League titles.
Schmeichel left United for Sporting Lisbon in 1999 and returned to England two years later to play out the final two seasons of his career with Aston Villa and, fatefully, City.
Should Manchester United appoint another club legend as interim manager or look elsewhere? Have your say in the comments!
Asked if he would take the interim job at the Red Devils to steady the ship, the Dane responded: "I would do anything for that club. I would, of course, I would. I would help them out in any way I could!"
At this point, Carragher interjected to ask: "You signed for Man City, didn't you?"
Richards could not contain himself and his laughter only grew as Schmeichel hit back: "You know what's really, really interesting: after your club [ Liverpool ] has won one Premier League... all of a sudden, you're all the way up there looking down on us."
Carragher took the back-and-forth well while Richards declared: "That's a big nibble!"
During the same show, Schmeichel threw his weight behind former teammate Steve Bruce, who was sacked by Newcastle United in October, to take over as interim manager.
"I would love to have somebody who comes in now to put pressure on the players," Schmeichel said. "A new voice, get them out there performing.
"Without making massive changes in style, or system, or something that the next one, the real one, the one they really want, has to come in and then start over again.
"Work on defending, not conceding goals. You cannot concede the number of goals we are doing and anybody who goes in there would need to start with that.
"You have to take small steps, you can’t just jump straight in and say we are going to play a pressing game. You can’t do that, the first thing you have to do is give confidence to everybody in the team.
"I just like the idea, if it is an interim, get somebody who knows the club. Get somebody who is known by the club as well. Somebody like Steve Bruce."
