Jamie Carragher reveals why Nuno Espirito Santo left Tottenham in Mauricio Pochettino comparison

Jamie Carragher believes Nuno Espirito Santo's sacking from Tottenham was down to "performances as well as results".

Nuno was relieved of his duties by Spurs on Monday morning following his side's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday evening.

Tottenham were outplayed against a struggling United side, with their attacking, and defensive, play poor on the night in north London - which led to boos from the home supporters around the stadium.

Nuno was only in charge of Tottenham for around four months, with just 17 games - in all competitions - with the Portuguese coach in the dugout for Spurs.

With Nuno now being sacked, Carragher does not think it is a "bad sacking", but did criticise the appointment, with the manager's style of play described as "boring".

"I don’t think Nuno at Spurs felt right. I don’t feel it’s a bad sacking, I think it was a bad appointment," the former Liverpool defender said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

"I think how Nuno comes across, he’s very reserved. I don’t think that’s going to work at a club like Tottenham. The performance’s that are aligned with the results has lost his job.

"Spurs fans would have loved to go back to the Pochettino time and how they were playing, but they had a tough start with him.

"The reason why Pochettino survives is because there’s something to get behind in terms of performances.

"They were exciting and good to watch. Under Nuno, the wins haven’t been convincing. I think it’s much about performances as well as results.

"He did a great job at Wolves, he did a brilliant job. But they were boring to watch.

"If you’re going to play like that, you have to win. They didn’t. The games they lost were bad ones."

football.london understands that Antonio Conte is in advanced talks to become the new manager of Tottenham, with a deal expected to be announced on Tuesday after negotiations in London today.

Spurs wanted to bring Conte to the club over the summer prior to appointing Nuno, but talks over an agreement broke down in the latter stages, but there is a growing confidence that Daniel Levy can get his man this time around.

Tottenham are next in action on Thursday evening, as they face Dutch club Vitesse in the Europa Conference League.
