Jamie Carragher reveals what he told Luis Suarez to derail £40m Arsenal move in 2013

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told Luis Suarez he was too good for Arsenal when the Gunners made an approach for the Uruguayan in 2013.

Arsene Wenger instructed the Gunners to try and sign the striker and the north London club bid £40,000,001 to activate the £40million buy out clause in the player's contract.

Rather than accept the offer in line with what was supposed to be set out in the paper work however the Reds refused to sell. Suarez would later leave Anfield to join Barcelona, having failed to fire Brendan Rodgers' team to the title.

Wenger even claimed that a verbal agreement had been in place with the former Ajax forward who went on to score 31 goals in 33 Premier League games prior to moving to Spain.

"When Luis Suarez was at Liverpool, we almost won the league and the year after was not as good," said Carragher on Monday Night Football. "I wanted him to stay at Liverpool but I knew in my head, and this is something I spoke to with him and Steven Gerrard.

"He nearly went to Arsenal and we said you’re too good for Arsenal. If you’re going to leave you have to go to Barcelona."

Carragher compared the Suarez situation six years ago to Eden Hazard's current predicament at Chelsea.

“That’s what I think with Eden Hazard," he said. "I think he’s one of the best players in the world, play for your Madrid and Barcelona, and at the moment Chelsea aren’t in the same league as them.

"For him as an individual player, he needs Madrid on his CV to sort of finish his career."
