Jamie Carragher reveals Steven Gerrard's 'perfect' Rangers outcome but makes Aston Villa confession

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher reckons Rangers boss Steven Gerrard taking the reins at Aston Villa would be a "great decision".

But the Sky Sports pundit would like to see his close pal stay at Ibrox and secure a second consecutive title to further enhance his burgeoning reputation.

Gerrard is the hot favourite with the bookies to become the next manager at Villa Park after Dean Smith was axed on Sunday following a wretched run of results.

The 41-year-old is highly regarded by the Midlands club and is understood to have been championed by former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow.

Villa were forced into action in the wake of the defeat to Southampton - a loss that leaves them only two points clear of safety.

Carragher senses a tough decision but ultimately wants the Liverpool legend to remain where he is in the quest for more Rangers title glory.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I think Aston Villa as a club would be a great decision for Steven Gerrard, but the situation he's in right now is that he took the title against Celtic last season and he's in a great position to win it again.

“I think in a perfect world you would want to stay with Rangers until the end of the season and come away with two titles."

Gerrard is the odds-on favourite to succeed Smith with former Villa assistant John Terry, Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand and Paolo Fonseca also among the backed candidates.
