Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have developed "an obsession" with catching opposition players offside, which can sometimes come back to bite them due to their high defensive line.
The Reds shipped seven goals to Aston Villa before the international break in a shambolic performance which often left Sky Sports summariser Carragher lost for words.
That loss has largely been put down to a blip from the reigning Premier League champions, although their high line remains a topic of conversation.
Liverpool face a trip to Goodison Park in the Merseyside derby on Saturday, and although Carragher doesn't think the high defensive line itself is an issue, he says the Reds are sometimes making life hard for themselves.
"Andy Robertson said something about the Arsenal game that they caught them offside a lot and I just thought that was an interesting thing to say," Carragher told the Liverpool Echo.
"I don't think it'd ever be something I'd say after a game, but obviously it is something that is in their head.
"The high line isn't the problem, I just feel that whether it is Jurgen Klopp and the coaches or the players, I feel there is an obsession with offside and catching the opposition offside.
"They don't need to change the high line, I would just love to see them drop off maybe two or three yards, that is all it is. When someone is in a dangerous position, it almost gives them something to get running.
"We all know, doesn't matter what level you play, if you're asked to run from a standing start, you jog two or three yards, you're already on your way and I just feel there is an obsession with offside."
