Jamie Carragher pinpoints key Chelsea problem Frank Lampard must address that Man City exposed

Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher insists Chelsea showed just how "fragile" they currently are during their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues suffered a fourth defeat in their last six Premier League outings, with a first half blitz from City putting Frank Lampard's troops to the sword, as goals from Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne fired Pep Guardiola's side into a 3-0 lead by half time.

That meant that the damage was well and truly done by the time substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi pulled a goal back in second half stoppage time.

The defeat to City has left Lampard's position under severe scrutiny, with reports claiming that the Chelsea hierarchy are concerned by the club's current troubles, despite spending more than £220million on new talent during the summer transfer window.

Should Chelsea's big signings be learning lessons?

Though there was no shortage of aspects about Chelsea's performance against City that attracted criticism, Sky Sports pundit Carragher has highlighted a period of just under five minutes of the first half that summed up the Blues' current woes.

“Between the two goals, it was four minutes and 50 seconds, Chelsea made six passes in that time, City made 50," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"Two of the passes were from the ‘keeper. So, in that moment of four minutes and 50 seconds, they were completely gone mentally. The game was gone then.

"Chelsea were never going to get back in that game then, City could have scored more. It just shows you where Chelsea are at the moment - how fragile they are - after making such a good start, and they just seemed to go when [Kevin] De Bruyne had that chance and that shows you what can happen in a split second of the game.

"It was really worrying, just analysing that time frame for Chelsea.”

The Blues' defeat to City means that the club have won three points less than they had at this stage last season, raising concern about the impact of Chelsea's summer signings.

The west London outfit, in particular, spent huge amounts of money on signing German duo Kai Havertz and Timo Werner during a memorable summer transfer window, but neither player has yet to live up to expectations.
