Jamie Carragher outlines what Rhys Williams can offer Liverpool that Fabinho and Joe Gomez can't

Jamie Carragher believes Rhys Williams will be able to provide Liverpool with ‘great aerial ability’ and that is something that Fabinho and Joe Gomez ‘don’t give’ Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds boss currently has a serious problem in the centre of his defence, with Fabinho now added to Liverpool's list of injured central defenders.

The Brazilian, who normally operates in central midfield, suffered a hamstring problem against FC Midtjylland on Tuesday night and was replaced in the first half by Williams.

Klopp’s side are already without Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman suffered a long-term injury against Everton in the Merseyside derby, while Joel Matip's lack of availability and Dejan Lovren's summer departure to Zenit Saint Petersburg, have left the Reds short.

As a result of Liverpool’s growing injury list, Williams could feature regularly in the coming weeks as the Reds look to continue their impressive form.

And although Williams has barely played for Liverpool's senior side, Carragher believes the youngster has the qualities to fill the void at the back.

“It’s a huge problem for Liverpool,” the Kop icon told CBS. “Matip was touch and go for this game. Whether he will be back for West Ham, I am not sure.

"The young lad Rhys Williams came back and actually did well tonight. What he does give you is a great size and great aerial ability that Fabinho or Joe Gomez don’t give you.

“I think everyone will have their fingers crossed that Matip is back for the game at the weekend for West Ham.

“Then maybe the Atlanta game because Liverpool have made a great start then it’s not as important. Then you got the Manchester City game next and that’s huge.”
