Jamie Carragher on the 'mad and strange' player running games for Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hailed Trent Alexander-Arnold after another starring performance from the full-back in the victory over West Ham.

The 21-year-old provided the assist for Georginio Wijnaldum's opening goal and was also the provider for Sadio Mane's winner, after the Hammers took a surprising lead in the second half.

Those contributions saw Alexander-Arnold equal the Premier League assists record for a single season after matching the record-breaking number of 12 he set last year.

Those performances have continued to earn rave reviews from Carragher and this was no exception, as he brilliantly rounded-up the brilliance of Liverpool's homegrown sensation.

“What makes him special is it’s like having Kevin De Bruyne at right-back. He’s like a midfield player, I actually remember at one stage David Beckham was playing right wing-back under Glenn Hoddle just because of his quality and, to be fair, Trent is pretty much playing wing-back with how he plays," he told Sky Sports.

“Wijnaldum can actually see Trent’s number on the back, he doesn’t think he’ll be able to get the ball in. Sometimes you think you can get too carried away when talking about a player but if you think about the best in that position, like a Cafu or a Dani Alves, they were world-class, they were the best in their position, but it was still what you associate with attacking full-backs.

“Whereas Trent is actually running the game from full-back for his team. The best team in Europe, their playmaker is a right-back from West Derby. It’s mad, it’s strange, I’ve never seen a full-back be such an influence for his team before.”
