Jamie Carragher on if Arsenal can finish in the top four this season under Mikel Arteta

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has told Arsenal to forget about their top-four hopes and focus on finding stability in the second half of the season.

The Gunners endured a forgetful opening few months of the campaign, leading to Unai Emery being sacked and replaced by Mikel Arteta, and are now looking to save their campaign.

Well adrift of the Premier League's top-four, Arsenal know that the Europa League is their only avenue towards securing Champions League football next season.

However, Carragher believes it's not just about results and the next few months need to be used to implement his style of play - but added that better players are needed.

Mikel Arteta: We need to be ready for a battle

“I think they’ve actually deserved more in certain games, I think the Chelsea one is the standout, it would have really hurt them to lose that game,” he told Sky Sports.

“At the moment Arsenal, and I’ve been in this position plenty of times with Liverpool, you get to the middle of January and into February and you don’t feel like you’ve got much to play for.

“They haven’t, they’re not going to finish in the top-four, they’re not obviously going down, so they’ve got the cup competitions and the real big thing of getting back into the Champions League and challenging for the Premier League.

“I don’t think performances are more important than results but where Arsenal are at now, they want to see something that can change. He’s put what he wants in there, they are more aggressive, but they need better players.”

Arsenal bolstered their defensive ranks in January by signing Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares on loan from Flamengo and Southampton respectively.
