Jamie Carragher on how Man United hold key to Liverpool's title dream and why pressure is off Jurgen Klopp's side

Kop legend Jamie Carragher insists Liverpool's mission over the coming weeks is to ensure that title rivals Manchester City simply have to win at Old Trafford.

The Reds, who find themselves a point behind Pep Guardiola's side following City's 2-0 win at Fulham, will regain top spot if they beat Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.

City's game in hand is the Manchester derby on Wednesday, April 24 and Carragher says it's down to Liverpool to ensure that they are still bang in contention when that contest comes around.

If Liverpool beat Spurs, Southampton, Chelsea and Cardiff prior to that date then any kind of City slip up would put the title race back in the Reds' hands.

“I think it will go down to the wire,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Liverpool have the tougher fixtures over the next two or three weeks. If they come out the other side of that in the same position, they can force City to have to win at Old Trafford.

“I think that's what a lot of Liverpool fans are looking at – that game at Old Trafford.

“I know Manchester United fans are desperate for Liverpool not to win the league but City have a great chance of winning the Quadruple which would topple United's Treble from '99.

“It's a big dilemma for United fans. Would you rather Liverpool win the league or City win the Quadruple? Hopefully a lot of them may change their opinions and try to get a decent result against City.”

Liverpool's seven-point lead disappeared after some frustrating stalemates with the likes of Leicester, West Ham and Everton.

But Carragher believes that it suits Jurgen Klopp's side to be cast as contenders rather than favourites.

“I think the pressure has come off Liverpool slightly because I think everyone expects City to win the league now they've gone in front,” he added.

“I said a few weeks ago that it might not be the worst thing in the world City going in front. When Liverpool were up there they were there to be shot at.

“There were lots of questions being shot at them and they weren't really answering them. They had a lot of draws in games.

Man City sweating on major injury that could hand Liverpool huge advantage

“Since City have gone top, Liverpool have had a decent run of winning games, including a big one away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

“They need to continue that now. They have got three really tough games in Spurs, Southampton away and Chelsea. Then on paper it looks a little bit easier than what City have got.”
