Jamie Carragher offers honest verdict as Chelsea make £40m transfer offer for Anthony Gordon

Jamie Carragher believes Everton will turn down a £40million offer from Chelsea for Anthony Gordon. According to our friends at Chronicle Live, the Blues have made the bid for Gordon, with Newcastle United also in talks.

Chelsea are in the market for another attacker, with talks ongoing with Barcelona for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, football.london understands. However, they are now reportedly also pursuing a deal for Gordon.

The 21-year-old had his breakthrough year at Everton last season and is attracting interest from numerous clubs. The Toffees, who are actively looking for another attacker themselves, will not want to lose the Liverpool-born forward.

Carragher, who was speaking in the Sky Sports studio following Chelsea's dramatic 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday evening, cannot see Everton accepting £40million for their young attacker. He said: "That's a lot of money for a young player just coming onto the scene.

"I don't see how Everton would accept that right now. They're lacking attacking players and he's the one big hope for the club. He's a local lad and he's the one they are all hanging their hats on. I think it will have to be a lot higher than that (£40million) for Everton to accept that."

Carragher's colleague Graeme Souness added: "£40million for a 21 year-old who's played 50 games? He's not set the world on fire, for me, and he goes to ground too easily. That's a hell of a lot of money."

Everton boss Frank Lampard last month insisted Gordon is not for sale and will not be moving on from Goodison Park this summer. The former Chelsea midfielder and manager said: "He gives everything and is going nowhere. He is our player and we want to build with him."
