Jamie Carragher names two signings Liverpool must make next summer

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool must strengthen at right-back and in attack next summer.

The Reds opted against replacing the departed Gini Wijnaldum and made just one major signing in defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig during the previous transfer window.

Liverpool are currently second in the table after seven games, behind Chelsea, and top of their Champions League group, which consists of Porto, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan.

However, the former Red believes Liverpool's squad depth could see them fall just short of rivals Chelsea and Manchester City this season and he's highlighted to positions that need strengthening.

“There’s no doubt that Liverpool don’t have the strength of Manchester United, City or Chelsea. They just don’t, their squads are unbelievable," Carragher said on Sky Sports' Overlap forum.

“But in terms of the 11, if you saw Liverpool’s 11, if they were playing Man City’s best team in a Champions League final or an FA Cup final - I’d still fancy Liverpool.

“Over the season, you won’t be getting that first 11, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] missed out against City and you saw the problems James Milner had.

“It’s not so much that Liverpool don’t have a great squad, they do, they’re just really short in probably two areas.

“Right back is a massive one as we saw against City, they’ve probably got the best set of centre-backs in the Premier League.

“The front players you’ve got Jota to add to Firmino, although that looks like a fight for a position. But I do think they’re an attacker short to go and win the league.

“With Salah and maybe Mane missing in January for the Africa Cup of Nations, someone better than Origi or Minamino on the bench, that these other teams have got."
