Jamie Carragher names seven Liverpool players in his team of the year - but no Alisson

Jamie Carragher has packed his Premier League team of the season so far full of Liverpool players, but omitted Brazilian trio Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino.

The former Reds defender plumped for seven players from his old club who top the table by 25 points.

He opted to go with Liverpool's entire first-choice back four, but left out goalkeeper Alisson, despite the no.1 helping his side to 10 clean sheets this season.

That is second only to Burnley's Nick Pope (11), and tied with Dean Henderson of Sheffield United, who earned Carragher's selection.

In fairness, Alisson did miss a number of games at the start of the season through injury, which may have swayed Carragher's call.

The rest of the defence was largely an easier decision, except for young centre-back Joe Gomez.

"I am going to be honest," Carragher said in his column for The Telegraph. "Assembling this team I am very wary of having too many Liverpool players, and this is one of the positions where I thought long and hard about alternatives."

He named Man Utd's Harry Maguire and Leicester duo Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu as potential options, but stuck with Gomez, who has not lost a game alongside partner Virgil van Dijk.

The omission of Fabinho may also surprise some, particularly given Carragher stated he was "Liverpool's best player until December" prior to his injury.

Reds captain Jordan Henderson - one of the candidates for the PFA Player of the Year - did get included, as well as fellow contenders Kevin de Bruyne of Man City and Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.

Carragher had his own thoughts on who should claim the coveted prize though.

“It may be many months before the Player of the Year award is presented, but [Sadio] Mane deserves it."

Mane was among Carragher's front three strikeforce, with Man City's Sergio Aguero getting the nod over Liverpool's Roberto Firmino, leaving one final decision to make.

“There was a moment when considering this line-up when I thought of leaving out Salah and selecting Raheem Sterling,” Carragher said on Salah's inclusion. 'I slept on it and thought, “What am I thinking?'. Nothing against Sterling, but he plays on the left, not right, so I am not prepared to compromise to leave out a player of Salah’s class."

Carragher's Premier League team of the season: D Henderson (Sheff Utd), Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Gomez, van Dijk, J Henderson (all Liverpool), De Bruyne (Man City), Grealish (A Villa), Mane, Salah (both Liverpool), Aguero (Man City)
