Jamie Carragher names Carlo Ancelotti Everton man of the match in win v Liverpool

Jamie Carragher says Carlo Ancelotti was his Everton man of the match against Liverpool.

Ancelotti guided his team to a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in Saturday's Merseyside derby at Anfield.

It was the Blue's first win at Anfield in 24 attempts, since 1999. The result also took them level on points with defending Premier League champions, with a game in hand.

Richarlison opened the scoring early on for the visitors and the points were sealed by a late Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty, as Jurgen Klopp's side suffered a fourth straight home defeat.

Asked what the key was to Everton's success on the day, Carragher told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports: "It was the manager, Carlo Ancelotti. I never gave a man of the match in the game for whatever reason, maybe it slipped my mind.

Royal Blue: What Carlo Ancelotti said to Everton players before famous Liverpool win - and why he's no hero

"So there were probably three or four Everton players you could have given it to.

"But I watched the game again yesterday morning when I got home and Everton's man of the match was the manager. Carlo Ancelotti was MOM, shall we say.

"You mentioned the record, 22 years since they won there - but that's the Premier League. Notoriously, Everton's record at Anfield is horrendous.

"So to actually win at Anfield for Everton is huge and they were celebrating like mad - and rightly so."

Before the weekend, Everton had won only six out of 58 league meetings against Liverpool at Anfield, with 30 defeats and 22 draws.

"Six wins in 58 - that's why that was so big, what happened on Saturday night," former Reds defender Carragher added.

"Forget the 22 years, Everton's record at Anfield, even with the greatest teams (has been poor)."

Carragher credited Ancelotti for taking the emotion out of the game from an Everton point of view.

"I'll tell you the reason, in my experience, the record has been so poor, and even at Goodison in the last 20 years as well, is that Everton never get the derby right emotionally," he said.

"They're either too up for it and they get players sent off, or they're absolutely terrified going into the game, certainly at Anfield.

"And the reason I say Ancelotti won them that game is he took the emotion out the game, with the team he picked.

"When that team came in, Evertonians getting ready for the game, their hearts sank. No (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin and no Allan.

"Now, Allan hadn't played for two months, and Calvert-Lewin was coming back from a hamstring injury, so it was the right decision.

"But because emotionally at times, Everton, the derby is like the biggest game they have to win...

"Roberto Martinez told me a story, that he always felt pressure to play Gareth Barry in a derby game at Anfield - and he wasn't 100% fit. He got injured, they lost the game, and he missed an FA Cup semi-final. And he always looks back at that as a huge regret.

"Ancelotti, again: 'This is three points for our European ambitions, forget Liverpool'.

"So that was getting it right, number one. Number two was the team he picked."
