Jamie Carragher mocks Gary Neville over Arsenal claim as Man United go level with Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has mocked fellow pundit Gary Neville over his celebrations of Manchester United going top and his differing views when it comes to Arsenal and his former club.

Neville posted a video on Twitter popping the cork off a bottle of champagne with the caption: "Happy new year (joint top)," with a laughing emoji.

That was after Manchester United beat Aston Villa to move level on points with leaders Liverpool, but not without controversy.

With the score 1-1, United were awarded a controversial penalty when Paul Pogba went to ground and many believe the Frenchman actually stumbled over his own feet.

In his punditry, Neville claimed it was the right decision, but just a week or so ago, the former Man United defender accused Arsenal star Kieran Tierney of being 'clever' in winning a spot-kick in the Gunners' 3-1 win over Chelsea.

He said: "There's not much in it he plays for i. I don't think he makes any contact with him and then what Tierney does is throw his leg back and waits for him.

"I don't think that's a penalty. It's been coming but it's not a penalty. I think it's absolutely certainly not a penalty.

"He's gone over and Tierney's thrown his leg back to Reece James."

"Look, Reece James has been done and he should never have made that challenge. But he’s been played by Tierney."

In that instance, while Tierney may have been clever, there was definitive contact, unlike the Pogba incident, which is not even clear on the slow motion of VAR.

And that inconsistency is what Carragher mocked in his reply to Neville's tweet. The former Liverpool man said: "He had the champagne ready! No wonder he said Pogba’s was a pen but Tierney’s wasn’t!!"

Arsenal fans might just agree.
