Jamie Carragher makes Premier League title prediction for Chelsea after £200m spending spree

Jamie Carragher has said Chelsea must sign a goalkeeper in order to win the Premier League title.

The Blues have been the biggest spenders in the summer transfer market thus far, splashing out over £200m on Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell.

However, Carragher still has concerns about Kepa Arrizabalaga and believes an upgrade is needed if Chelsea are close challenge Liverpool and Manchester City this season.

Chelsea reach Edouard Mendy transfer agreement

"Not for me, no. Their spending has been at the top-end of the pitch and until they rectify the goalkeeper situation, I don’t think Chelsea have any chance of winning the Premier League," he said.

"You only have to look at Pep Guardiola’s first season in England, Jurgen Klopp’s first 18 months, until they sign goalkeepers.

"They make the real difference. If Chelsea sign a top goalkeeper, I think that will make a big difference.

"Also, to be fair to Chelsea and Frank, the expenditure in this summer is almost three or four transfer windows of money getting spent in one go in some ways.

"They couldn’t sign any players last season, they’ve still got the Hazard money and the Morata money.

"The stuff they’re talking about, how much they’ve actually spent, it is club money in some ways, but until they change the ‘keeper, they haven’t got a chance."

On the topic of goalkeepers, Edouard Mendy is poised to join the Blues from Rennes in a deal worth an initial £18.47million, plus £2.7m in add-ons.

Interestingly, Mendy was on Chelsea's radar prior to him joining from Reims for an undisclosed fee last summer, and comments from loan goalkeeper coach Christophe Lollichon explain why he would be perfect for the Blues.

"He has reached maturity, with a fairly unusual path, and it is all the more meritorious," Lollichon told Le Phoceen last year. "Edouard Mendy is today, for me, the best goalkeeper of the championship of France.

"He is what I call a proactive, very influential goalkeeper who does not suffer the game.

"Reims really did a great job with him. Maybe at OM they could not detect the talent he had in him, but it was perhaps not the right time too.

"In any case, he's a great goalkeeper that we necessarily follow in the Premier League.

"When you are nearly 2 metres (1m97), with such a ground game, such placement and initiative-taking as he has, if recruiters do not look at him, it's because they have to change jobs (laughs).

"Besides, I know he's a very good guy."
