Jamie Carragher makes Mohamed Salah Liverpool contract and Real Madrid claim

Jamie Carragher believes Mohamed Salah will commit his future to Liverpool and that his old side no longer have to worry about losing their best players to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Salah has two years left on an extension he signed in the summer of 2018 and was identified earlier this year as one of several key men Liverpool were keen to speak to about new terms this summer.

Player retention has been a key theme of the summer with deals already secured for Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson.

The ECHO understands that Liverpool want to reward Salah for his form during his time at Anfield and any fresh terms are likely to make him the most well-paid player in the club's history.

And Carragher not only expects Salah to sign a new Reds deal, but he believes that his old side are now bucking a trend that once saw Liverpool’s stars lured away from Anfield by the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

"It’s not just about Jordan Henderson, it’s about the group of players who have signed long-term contracts," he told Sky Sports.

"I think Liverpool have some of the best players in the world, with Alisson signing a six-year deal and Virgil van Dijk. I think Mohamed Salah will be the next one to sign.

"In years gone by, certainly when I was at the club, if we had players of that quality, they would be going to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

"We’ve lost so many players over the years, but the club this year hasn’t spent much in the transfer market. We’ve bought [Ibrahima] Konate in for £36 million ($50m), and we’ve certainly recouped that through the sales.

"I think the money and expenditure this pre-season was going to go on new contracts, so that those players can stay at Liverpool for the rest of their careers.

"Jordan’s the latest one and follows Andy Robertson, Fabinho also and I expect Salah to do so."
