Jamie Carragher makes Mohamed Salah contract claim amid Liverpool talks

Jamie Carragher has said that Mohamed Salah deserves to be one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League, amid his contract negotiations with Liverpool.

The Reds handed out several improved deals over the summer to key players, as they prioritised keeping their star men for the long-term over bringing in new signings.

However, Salah is one player who is yet to sign on the dotted line. With two years left on his current contract, the club will be determined for their talisman not to enter the final year.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher insists that Salah’s importance to Jurgen Klopp’ side and consistency as a prolific goalscorer should be reflected in his contract.

“[Salah] deserves to be one of the highest paid players in the Premier League for what he’s done at Liverpool. Never injured and year after year, he’s top goalscorer”, the ex-England international told Sky Sports.

“He will be in the all-time Liverpool XI there’s no doubt for me about that. I just hope this gets sorted sooner rather than later, I think it will.

“You’re always debating about money. The club wants a bit less, the player wants a bit more, but that needs to be sorted and he deserves it for what he's done for Liverpool.”

Signing from Roma in 2017, Salah scored 44 goals in his debut season, arriving at Anfield six months before Virgil van Dijk. Alisson and Fabinho then arrived the following summer to form the core of the side that won both the Champions League and Premier League.

The 29-year-old opened the scoring in the club’s 3-0 win over Leeds at the weekend, marking the Egyptian’s 100th Premier League goal.

Having scored 98 of those for Liverpool, with 128 across all competitions, Carragher believes Salah’s role as a catalyst for Klopp’s team is often underplayed.

“He gets his 100th goal in the Premier League although a couple were for Chelsea. We shouldn’t forget that Salah plays to the right”, Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

“He’s massively important. I think sometimes I feel for him, in that he slightly goes under the radar in terms of Liverpool.

“When we think about Liverpool winning the league we always go back to signing Alisson and Van Dijk. It’s mentioned that it was the goalkeeper and the centre-half that took it to this next level, Salah was part of that.”
