Jamie Carragher makes Everton job claim about England manager Gareth Southgate

Jamie Carragher reckons the fact that England manager Gareth Southgate wasn't linked to the recent Everton and Tottenham Hotspur vacancies shows that he's ideally suited to the international game.

The 50-year-old has steered the Three Lions into their first European Championship final on Sunday where they will face Italy at Wembley but he suffered relegation from the Premier League in his only managerial role in club football with Middlesbrough back in 2009.

HITC quote Carragher as telling Sky Sports : “It just feels with Gareth Southgate that he’s perfectly suited to international football and this England squad.

“Tottenham and Everton, two of the biggest clubs in the country, didn’t have a manager at that time. And no one would link Gareth Southgate with that job.

“That wasn’t a criticism of Gareth or those clubs. It’s just if the big jobs come up in this country then I don’t think Gareth will be in the running for it. Whether it’s because of what happened at Middlesbrough.

* Can you be from Liverpool and support England?

“Or he just seems to be perfect for England. There is no one else you would want managing England.”

After protracted searches at both clubs, Everton ended up appointing former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez while Tottenham Hotspur went for Nuno Espirito Santo, who earlier in June had appeared close to joining the Blues.
