Jamie Carragher leads tributes to 'giant of a man' former headteacher after funeral

Jamie Carragher has issued a touching tribute after the death of his former headmaster, describing him as a "giant of a man."

The ex-Liverpool FC star took to Instagram to remember John Rourke, who led All Saints Primary School in Bootle, formerly known as St James'.

It is where the Reds defender's love affair with football started and he developed the skills that would take him to play at Anfield for 17 years.

On social media, the TV pundit, who posted a photo and funeral order of service of Mr Rourke, wrote: "The best headmaster any kid who went to St James’ on Marsh Lane Bootle could ever wish for.

"Huge influence on me and all his pupils, plus schools football in Bootle and Sefton.

"Huge Evertonian and a giant of a man."

In other tributes on social media, one said: "Mr Rourke taught at and was subsequently head of St James' primary school from the mid 60's to the late 90's.

"I'm sure [he] will be remembered with respect by everyone who was a pupil or parent of a pupil during those years.

"When I shared the sad news on Friday with a former colleague of John's, his words were that John was "a good, kind and honourable man" and I couldn't have put it any better.

"The world is a lesser place for his passing.

"RIP John, a true Christian who lived life in the spirit of his faith."

His funeral took place on Friday at St William of York Catholic Church.

Speaking years ago, Carra described the influence the Sefton teacher and Blues season ticket holder had on his early life.

He said: "People like Mr Rourke were really important to me.

"As you’re coming through you come across certain people who help you on your way and that was definitely the case with him.”
