Jamie Carragher lays into Ciaran Clark as mistakes cost Newcastle against Man City

Ireland international Ciaran Clark was on the end of some harsh criticism from Jamie Carragher as Man City strolled to a 4-0 victory against Newcastle United.

The former Liverpool star - covering the game as part of the Sky Sports Super Sunday punditry team - was less than impressed with the defender's efforts for City's first two goals.

A shocking defensive mix-up between Clark and Toon keeper Martin Dubravka led to Ruben Dias opening the scoring.

When the ball was hooked into the six-yard box by Bernardo Silva, Clark, looking as though he had gotten a shout from Dubravka, let the ball run past him - allowing an unmarked Dias to head the ball to the net from point-blank range.

Carragher fumed: "He's just got to head it. It's absolutely shocking that so early in the game.

"Listen, you could argue they're both at fault. I've been in that position at times, you've just got to head it away. This is Ciaran Clark who was involved in the Norwich goal as well - that's just a terrible start.

"They're just not good enough defensively."

Joao Cancelo added a second with an impressive 20-yard strike and Carragher again felt that Newcastle's central defensive pairing, Clark and Jamaal Lascelles, let themselves down.

He added: "Cancelo comes inside of the last man. The two centre-backs, Lascelles and Ciaran Clark...he has time to take another touch! It's unbelievable. The gap... and both of them turning their back...that's got nothing to do with ability.

"Defensively, you've got to throw yourself at it, make yourself as big as possible. The two of them are as small as possible."
