Jamie Carragher launches scathing attack on Newcastle United in defeat at Aston Villa

Jamie Carragher launched a stinging attack on Newcastle United at the end of their defeat to Aston Villa.

Newcastle were beaten 2-0 at Villa Park on Saturday night following first-half strikes from Ollie Watkins and Bertrand Traore.

Steve Bruce 's men are now without a win in 10 matches in all competitions.

The Magpies have dropped a place to 16th in the Premier League table, now behind Burnley on goal difference.

Even 'Sob on the Tyne' banner creator feels sorry for Newcastle United fans now

They are seven points clear of the relegation zone, though third-from-bottom Fulham have a game in hand on them.

Carragher was on co-commentary duty for Sky Sports and made his feelings clear as the seconds ticked down to the final whistle.

The former Liverpool man believes Newcastle are "sleepwalking" into a relegation battle and things will not change until the club is under new ownership.

"It just feels a club that is just nothing at this moment - just sleepwalking into another relegation dogfight," he said.

"Twice they've done down under (current owner) Mike Ashley. At this moment, there's a bit of a gap between them and Fulham, who are third bottom, but Fulham and West Brom - you'd even say at this stage, with a long way to go - are in much better form than Newcastle.

"So poor yet again. You never feel like they're going to score a goal, you never feel like they're going to keep a clean sheet.

"There's no doubt the supporters, they don't like the team, they don't like the owner, they don't like the manager, so the position Steve Bruce's is in, obviously he's getting criticism at the moment.

"He's the manager, the buck stops with him, but until Newcastle get new ownership, we're going to be seeing the same thing - a team that is just drifting, doing nothing, becoming a nothing club and that's what Newcastle have never been.

"There's always been some sort of spark, some sort of interest, some sort of enthusiasm. You actually watch them play and now it's just boring."
