Jamie Carragher laughs at Gary Neville claim after Man United battered by Spurs

Jamie Carragher has laughed off Gary Neville's claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not been backed at Manchester United.

The Red Devils crashed to a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, which underlined their need for a defender. While Neville is among many former United players to have been critical of the Old Trafford hierarchy this summer over their inability to strengthen in the transfer market, Carragher does not buy that as an excuse.

As Neville raged on co-commentary about how Solskjaer had not been backed in the transfer market, Carragher posted in jest on social media:

Neville argued that Jose Mourinho took on the Old Trafford board after their failure to secure transfer targets and that he wanted to see if Solskjaer would do the same thing.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: " If you remember the last manager Man United had here, he fell out with the club over Jerome Boateng, Toby Alderweireld, and another centre-back that I can’t remember.

"The club didn’t back him, and Jose decided to take the board on.

"Ole’s not doing that, he’s playing it by the book. Will it help him? Let’s see."

Carragher's scorn at the suggestion Solskjaer has not been backed is interesting.

The Red Devils spent £35m on Donny van de Beek this summer, who is yet to start in the Premier League this season.

Last year also saw United spend £190m on transfers, with Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all arriving for big money.

Maguire became the most expensive defender in history, passing the fee Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk.

Yet, just over 12 months later, the Red Devils are once again on the lookout for defenders after conceding six at Old Trafford.
