Jamie Carragher labels Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale as signing of the season after £30m transfer

Jamie Carragher has hailed Aaron Ramsdale as the Premier League signing of the season so far as a result of his stunning Arsenal form.

Despite initially being brought in as this season's understudy to Bernd Leno following a £30million move from Sheffield United, Ramsdale has turned his fortunes around at the Emirates and solidified his position as the Gunners' No. 1.

The Arsenal goalkeeper has recorded nine Premier League clean sheets in just 16 games and has pulled off some remarkable saves in that time, including memorable stops from Tottenham's Lucas Moura and Leicester's James Maddison.

Now at the season's midway point, Carragher has given Ramsdale the ultimate praise by saying he's the best signing any club has made so far.

“I went for Ramsdale because it was almost the biggest surprise to me when they brought him in,” Carragher explained on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“I thought they would bring him in as back-up, and almost bring him in as an English player because of the quota.

“He hadn’t impressed me, certainly in his Premier League time at Sheffield United and Bournemouth. It’s not just the saves he’s made. He’s a personality and a character.

“Already to go into a dressing room at Arsenal, yes there are young players in there, but it’s still a huge club.

“Going into Arsenal as a young lad, a goalkeeper. I think he’s got a presence about him that I didn’t see that he had and I think he’s had a big impact on the team.”

Ramsdale has helped guide the Gunners into fourth place in the table. He'll be looking to build on his good form in the coming weeks, starting with a difficult game against the league's leaders Manchester City at the Emirates on New Year's Day.
