Jamie Carragher issues Tottenham verdict and makes clear point about Mauricio Pochettino's tenure

Jamie Carragher does not believe Tottenham Hotspur will make the top four this season and said they were more likely to win big trophies under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs fell to a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend to see them fall to ninth in the league.

Jose Mourinho's' side have now picked up just 16 points in 14 games and they have lost four of their last five Premier League matches.

They sit six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea but do have a game in hand.

This is a far cry from when they topped the Premier League back in December and the usual critics of Mourinho were lauding them for their early-season performances.

Premier League top scorer

And on Monday Night Football last night, Liverpool legend Carragher poured scorn on Spurs' hopes of qualifying for the Champions League and said some criticism of Pochettino, now Paris Saint-Germain manager, during his tenure at Tottenham was "invalid".

"Now, it's not about proving me right or wrong, I do worry for Tottenham as I don't think they are good enough for the top four, I don't think they will get top four because of that reason," he told Sky Sports.

"I think what Pochettino did, Pochettino was criticised for not getting a trophy and I can get that.

"But when we think of Tottenham and trophies, let's be honest about it, we never think of Tottenham for the league or the Champions League.

"We think in every 10 years they might win an FA Cup or a Carabao Cup."

Under Pochettino, Spurs qualified for the Champions League, made the final of the competition and were once runners-up in the Carabao Cup.

"What Pochettino did that was special, he made Tottenham supporters think they could win the biggest trophies out there. In terms of a Premier League, a Champions League final, that's what he did," continued Carragher.

"So when people criticise him for not winning and Pochettino used to say 'I am interested in winning the biggest trophies not the little ones'.

"So that criticism for me was at times a little bit invalid, but I do worry where Tottenham are in terms of getting back to being a top-four club.

"I think they are a long way from that and the actual football they are playing to get there they need to have results if you play like that and they are not getting results at the moment."

Saturday night's loss to City was a complete contrast to their meeting in November. Spurs won 2-0 and were top of the table, whereas City looked out of ideas.

Since then, City have taken 41 points from a possible 45 to take a decisive advantage in the title race.

Tottenham are now 17 points behind Guardiola's side after 23 games.
