Jamie Carragher issues damning verdict on Mikel Arteta and Arsenal's Champions League hopes

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has issued a damning verdict on Arsenal's Champions League hopes, despite the dominant victory over Newcastle United.

The Gunners stormed to a 4-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, securing their biggest victory since Mikel Arteta replaced Unai Emery at the reigns last year.

Victory put Arsenal six points behind Tottenham in fifth place, which could lead to Champions League qualification due to Manchester City's ban, and Arteta is yet to taste defeat in 2020.

However, despite the positives, Carragher is convinced that the North London side remain short and will not be able to bring an end to three seasons outside of Europe's elite competition.

Jens Lehmann explains Arsenal's 'mediocre' results

“I think it was a great result, a brilliant second-half performance, I thought the first half was very poor, but I just don’t think Arsenal are actually good enough," he told Sky Sports.

“Yes they’ve closed the points gap, it was nice for them to get a few goals with [Nicolas] Pepe scoring, [Bukayo] Saka did really well at full-back, so there has been a lot of positivity around Mikel Arteta coming in and how things have changed.

“But it hasn’t actually changed the results so much, in fact they’ve actually got worse in some ways, so it was a big thing for them to get the win but Arsenal aren’t good enough to get into the Champions League.”
