Jamie Carragher identifies the one regret Liverpool will have in title race

Liverpool fell agonisingly short of Premier League title glory - and Jamie Carragher believes they will have one regret after losing out in the title race.

The Reds won their last nine games and finished on a remarkable 97 points but finished one behind Manchester City after neither side slipped up in their final few games.

Anfield legend Carragher hailed the "extraordinary" City for their triumph - but he reckons Jurgen Klopp's side will be kicking themselves for losing out in their head-to-head battle with Pep Guardiola's men.

City emerged with a 2-1 win when the sides met at the Etihad Stadium in January with the result ultimately proving crucial in deciding the destination of the title.

Carragher told Sky Sports : "The only thing Liverpool can look back at with regret is they didn't beat City. You can't expect other people to take points off City if you don't do it yourselves, and Liverpool only took one from six.

"Next season, they have to look at those games as cup finals and beat them. Easier said than done!

"Liverpool have a manager who is an optimist and will feel he can challenge again next season, but if City are going to get 96, 98, 100 points, it's very difficult to stop.

"This Man City team is something extraordinary."

Carragher says the Champions League final against Tottenham on June 1 will now take on extra importance for Klopp's side as they eye silverware to show for their stunning season.

He added: "You can understand the Liverpool players and manager will look a bit flat as they want something to show for their efforts. That's why the Champions League final is so important.

"I have said before that I think this Liverpool team is the best for 30 years, and if that manager wins the European Cup, he will be the best manager they have had in 30 years. This team needs something big to show for what they have done."
