Jamie Carragher hits back at Jurgen Klopp saying there is a reason why he doesn't manage

Jamie Carragher has hit back at Jurgen Klopp claiming that he believes the Liverpool boss has made a "mistake".

Klopp is coming to terms with having to retain Liverpool's title without a key component in his side, centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

On Monday Night Football, Sky Sports pundit Carrager suggested Liverpool should have signed a centre-back in the summer and will now have to do so in January.

"Dejan Lovren went and they didn't replace him so they only have three centre-backs and one of those, Joel Matip, is always injured," Carragher said.

"There are question marks now about Joe Gomez. So there is no doubt that Liverpool had to go big in the transfer market."

Klopp hit out at the suggestion in his press conference, saying: "We went into the season with three centre-backs plus Fabinho as cover and some youngsters.

"It's hard to have four world-class centre-halves.

"If anyone wants to tell us we made a mistake - I think Carragher mentioned already - there are a few reasons why they don't do this job."

This isn't the first time in recent weeks that Reds boss Klopp has hit out at a Sky Sports pundit after he clashed with Roy Keane following the win over Arsenal.

And Carragher has decided to hit back on Twitter, pointing out that he never suggested the Liverpool boss had made a mistake.

He wrote: "Not once this season have I said it was a mistake for Klopp not to buy a centre-back for the exact reason he states."

Van Dijk is set to have surgery on his knee after he suffered an ACL tear in the 2-2 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby.

The Holland international could be out for as long as nine months.
